ARCADE FOOD HALL PRESENTS MEXA BY SONORA TAQUERIA

01/09/2022

Sonora Taqueria’s Michelle Salazar de la Rocha and Sam Napier, creators of “London’s best taco”, will bring their brand new alter ego, Mexa, to Arcade Food Hall at Centre Point.

Launching on Friday 16th September, Mexa will be a celebration of the flavours that made Sonora so popular, along with fresh new dishes and combinations. Expect quesadillas, tacos and mariscos (seafood) together like you’ve never tried before.

Rooted in pride and heritage, Mexa, usually a term of endearment in Mexico, will be a reimagining of Sonora’s much-loved menu. Dishes will be faithful to how they’re found in Mexico, with one exception. As Sam says, “in Mexico, a restaurant wouldn’t really serve seafood and tacos together, so Mexa has a core division: between a taqueria and a seafood place.”

The seafood element of the menu will be made up of two dishes - Ceviche and Agua chile - both based on the same principle of curing seafood with acid. “Ceviche de lobina (of seabass) is from a recipe passed down through Michelle’s family. Tostadas will be topped with a thin layer of creamy mayo, cold lime-cured sea bass ceviche, avocado and salsa negra. The texture of the Agua chile (cured prawn) will be a little more raw, plated with razor-fine cucumber, red onion slices, salsa negra and cracked chillies and then served with Totopos. Both dishes are fresh, punchy and “perfect with a Michelada for a hangover.”

Corn tortillas will lay the foundation for toppings such as Suadero (confit brisket) with coriander and salsa roja; Carnitas (confit pork) with pickled onion and a vibrant salsa verde; and grilled Nopales (cactus) with caramelised onion and cheese. Whilst quesadillas will come generously filled and in two forms: Birria, spicy stewed lamb with consomé, and Gobernador, a taco famously created for a Sinaloan governor, oozing with sautéed prawns, melted cheese and salsa roja.

Arcade will celebrate Mexa’s arrival with two taco-packed fiestas on Sunday 18th and Sunday 25th September, with margaritas, mezcal and live Mariachi music.

On partnering with Arcade, Sam and Michelle say:

“We're excited to bring Mexa to Arcade. It's been a unique opportunity for us to explore the other side of Mexican food and to also introduce our version of Sinaloan Mariscos, which are close to our hearts.”

Mexa will open to the public at Arcade Food Hall, Centre Point, on 16th September.

Opening hours:

Tuesday - Friday: 10am - 11pm

Saturday: 10am - 11pm

Sunday: 12pm - 7pm
