ADEJOKÉ BAKARE’S CHISHURU TO OFFICIALLY REOPEN IN CENTRAL LONDON THIS AUTUMN

Following the success of Adejoké (Joké) Bakare’s Brixton Village restaurant and an extended pop-up at The Globe in Borough Market this summer, Chishuru restaurant will open in its new Fitzrovia home in mid-September.

The new 50-cover restaurant will open on Great Titchfield Street in London this autumn with front of house managed by Joké's business partner and friend, Matt Paice. The menu will continue to pay homage to Joké’s West African heritage with her recognisable experimental flair, open fire cooking and an extended pastry offering. Dishes will include Sinasir rice cake with white and brown crab and squash puree; Cod fillet with mbongo tchobi (spiced black sauce) and wilted greens; and Moringa soup, black sesame caramel and baobab meringue.

The wine list will be sourced entirely from independent producers throughout France from Beaujolais to the Jura to Roussillon, each carefully selected to complement the heat and complex flavours across the menu. Notable cocktails will feature West African herbs and spices including a House-pickled okra martini as an aperitif, and an Eau de Vie shot with alligator pepper as a digestif.

Joké worked closely with interior designer Sasha Filskow to showcase authentic materials including rough plastered walls, wood grains and pigmented cement. Soft furnishings have been sourced from British-Nigerian designer Eva Sonaike to reflect the visceral and authentic roots of the Chishuru menu. Through strong graphics, rich colours and carefully curated lighting, including a commissioned light feature from South African designer Mash.T, alongside table tops and stonework custom-made in North Africa, create a sense of home.

Adejoké says, “It’s been a long time coming, but opening this restaurant has been a life-long dream of mine. This new kitchen will allow me to explore even further the different cuisines of my heritage – Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba. My food isn’t tied to tradition, but is instead inspired by the dishes of my childhood that have then been given a London sensibility.”
